Managing Editor

Guernica: a magazine of art and politics is searching for a Managing Editor to ensure the efficient operation of the publication. This position reports to the Editor-In-Chief. Support staff reporting to the Managing Editor may include Senior Editors, Associate Editors, Assistant Editors, Copy Editors, Interns, and Volunteers. Responsibilities include:

Content & Coordination:

-Coordinate all phases of editorial development and production with the Editor-In-Chief
-Maintain master editorial calendar and content files and enforce production deadlines
-Supervise the submission process and tracking system
-Convene Staff meetings as needed for planning and/or problem solving

Staff Management:

-Recruit and manage qualified Editors, Assistant Editors, Copy Editors, Interns, and Volunteers and provide ongoing feedback for all personnel
-Ensure that HR files (e.g., job descriptions, stylebook, records, etc.) are updated and available to staff; recommend changes and updates to those manuals
-Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and developmental programs

General Management:

-Enforce and follow policies, procedures and processes of the Editor-in-Chief
-Be proactive in leadership, planning, coordination and problem-solving
-Participate in all Staff and Editorial meetings as needed
-Stay abreast of current political, cultural, and international issues
-Provide evaluation of manuscripts to Editor-In-Chief, as needed

Qualifications:

-Significant organizational, analytical and communication skills normally acquired through at least 3 years of senior management experience in a publishing or non-profit environment.
-Ability to supervise and motivate a talented group of volunteer editors, writers, and interns.
-Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to enforce strict deadlines
-Knowledge of and interest in substantive issues of concern to the organization

Commitment:

-One-year minimum commitment required
-Mandatory attendance at all Staff, Editorial, and Administrative Meetings
