Magnitude 6.8 quake jolts Japan off Fukushima, tsunami advisory

August 19, 2011—A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted northeastern Japan off Fukushima prefecture on Friday and a 50 cm tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The tsunami advisory was issued for the coastal areas that suffered severe damage from a massive [HAARP-generated?] quake in March.

Fukushima radiation released equal to more than 29 “Hiroshima-type atomic bombs”

August 18, 2011—“How much radioactive materials have been released from the [Daiichi nuclear power] plant?” asked Dr Tatsuhiko Kodama, a professor at the Research Centre for Advanced Science and Technology and Director of the University of Tokyo’s Radioisotope Centre, in a July 27 speech to the Committee of Health, Labour and Welfare at Japan’s House of Representatives. Kodama’s centre, using 27 facilities to measure radiation across the country, has been closely monitoring the situation at Fukushima—and their findings are alarming. According to Dr Kodama, the total amount of radiation released over a period of more than five months from the ongoing Fukushima nuclear disaster is the equivalent to more than 29 “Hiroshima-type atomic bombs” and the amount of uranium released “is equivalent to 20” Hiroshima bombs.

Warren to explore Senate run

August 19, 2011—Prospective U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren filed paperwork yesterday to create an exploratory campaign committee, the next step in a possible challenge to Senator Scott Brown. The Harvard Law School professor and former Obama administration official also created a website—elizabethforma.com—to solicit donations and possible volunteers. Warren has been traveling around Massachusetts this week conducting a self-described “listening tour.”

Nancy Pelosi Heckled at Town Hall Over Debt Bill: “Sell-Out”

August 18, 2011—House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was heckled several times at a town hall meeting in response to her vote for the “Satan sandwich” debt ceiling bill in Oakland, California. Pelosi received the crowd’s wrath after touting that the Democrats were able to get no cuts in entitlements in the deal. However, this was still not enough. “Sell-out!” … “Why did you vote for it?” … “You voted for that Satan sandwich,” were some of the comments yelled at Pelosi.

Obama Administration to Review All Deportation Cases, Apply DREAM Act-Style Criteria

August 18, 2011—The Obama administration announced Thursday that it would launch a case-by-case review of illegal immigrants slated for deportation, in a move that could grant a reprieve to so-called DREAM Act beneficiaries and thousands of others. The DREAM Act is a proposal in Congress to give illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children a chance at legal status if they complete two years of college or military service. Though the bill has not passed, supporters and critics alike suggested Thursday’s announcement could serve to unilaterally carry out its provisions.

US, allies declare that Syria’s Assad must leave

—Ok, time for Syria to declare that Obama do the same.

August 19, 2011—Executing a global squeeze play, the United States and its European allies on Thursday demanded an end to four decades of brutal family dictatorship in Syria and underscored the tough talk with new sanctions on President Bashar Assad’s government. But the diplomacy [sic] left many questions unanswered, including how the demand for Assad’s ouster can be backed up in the absence of any appetite for military intervention, and who inside the Syrian government or among the country’s fragmented opposition might take his place.

TSA launching behavior-detection program at Boston airport

—As part of pilot program, screeners will engage passengers at Logan International Airport in conversation in effort to detect “suspicious behavior.”

August 17, 2011—For the next two months at Logan International Airport in Boston, passengers will be casually greeted by Transportation Security Administration officials. But the officers aren’t there for a friendly “hello”—they’re trying to deter and detect passengers who pose a risk to aviation security. As part of the TSA’s new behavior-detection pilot program that started this week, screeners are engaging each passenger in Terminal A in casual conversation in an effort to detect suspicious behavior. After passengers provide their boarding pass and ID, they have to answer a few questions from TSA officers who have received two weeks of training.

Israeli warplanes kill seven in Gaza

August 18, 2011—Israeli fighter jets have targeted a building in the city of Rafah in the south of Gaza Strip, killing at least seven Palestinians. The Palestinian fatalities caused on Thursday include a nine-year-old boy and a young girl, a Press TV correspondent reported. Tel Aviv claims it launched the strikes in response to attacks near the Red Sea resort of Eilat in southern Israel, which left at least eight Israelis dead and dozens others injured.
