In a video conversation with Harry Kreisler, the political economist cuts through the hype surrounding India & China’s rise, how socialism laid the groundwork for it and India’s edge.

Recognizing the nerd in all of us, Guernica brings you Conversations with History, a video series of interviews with distinguished intellectuals conducted by creator and executive producer Harry Kreisler and produced by the Institute of International Studies at the University of California at Berkeley.

In this week’s episode, Kreisler welcomes Berkeley economist Pranab Bardhan for a discussion of his new book, Awakening Giants, Feet of Clay. Bardhan discusses his interest in poverty and inequality in the context of his intellectual odyssey. He then focuses on the myths and realities surrounding the emergence of China and India, addressing several questions: What have these countries achieved? How do they compare in terms of inequality and social welfare? What are the factors that explain their reemergence as economic powerhouses? What impact has globalization had on their trajectory? Will they succeed in reconciling economic efficiency with democratic accountability?
