May 5, 2011—The director of the CIA has today revealed there was a 25 minute video blackout during the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Leon Panetta admitted the live feed from helmet-mounted cameras worn by the Navy Seal team was cut off as they stormed the buildings in Abbottabad. A photograph of U.S. President Barack Obama, defence staff and aides in the situation room was released by the White House, appearing to show them anxiously watching as the mission unfolded. But in reality they knew little of what was taking place in the fortified compound during the 38 minutes it took the Navy Seals to complete Operation Geronimo.

May 5, 2011—Only one of four principal targets shot dead by U.S. commandos in the raid which killed Osama bin Laden was involved in any hostile fire, a person familiar with the latest U.S. government reporting on the raid told Reuters on Thursday. The account of Monday’s 40-minute raid has new descriptions of the event, including that Navy SEALs shot an occupant of the compound who they thought was armed, but apparently was not. It confirms that bin Laden was not armed when he was shot dead, nor are there indications that he directly threatened his attackers, according to the first source and a second U.S. government source who is familiar with briefings on the raid.

The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a T-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses, and mouths.

May 5, 2011—Radical Muslims are already calling the site of Osama bin Laden’s ocean burial the “Martyr”s Sea’, according to one of Britain’s leading Islamic scholars. The U.S. said the decision to drop bin Laden’s body into the North Arabian Sea was taken to avoid creating a shrine for the slain Al Qaeda chief. But Abdal Hakim Murad, Muslim Chaplain at Cambridge University, claimed yesterday that the move could backfire on the Americans. Speaking on Radio 4’s ‘Today’ program, he said it was ‘disappointing’ that bin Laden wasn’t taken into custody. “By tipping him into the sea, the Americans may have created a kind of shrine. The car bomber blew up his vehicle at a police headquarters in the mainly Shiite Muslim city of Hillah before 7 a.m. as the police switched from overnight to day shift. It was the second major attack in Iraq since bin Laden was killed early Monday.
Japan suspects radiation leak from fuel rods at plant in Fukui prefecture
May 3, 2011—Radioactive leakage from fuel rods at a nuclear power plant in the city of Tsuruga in Fukui prefecture on Honshu island of Japan are believed to be the cause of a surge in the density of toxic substances detected in coolant water, the prefectural government said Monday. Japan Atomic Power Company, owner and operator of the potentially faulty nuclear plant, has said it will attempt to manually override the plant‘s No. 2 reactor’s system in an effort to contain the leak and conduct further investigation into its critical cooling systems.
Applications for unemployment benefits hit 8-month high
May 6, 2011—The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits surged last week to the highest level in eight months, a troubling sign a day ahead of the government’s report on April employment. The Labor Department said Thursday that applications rose 43,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 474,000. But that was largely the result of unusual factors, including a high number of school systems in New York that closed for spring break, the department said.
