rsz_bates.jpgNo doubt, the military hoped that by shoving Bradley Manning away in solitary confinement at the Quantico base in Virginia, they could make him disappear from public memory. To no avail. Yes, this is the same 23 year-old who bragged about lip-synching to Lady Gaga’s “‘Telephone’ while exfiltrating possibly the largest data spillage in American history” (some 250,000 cables), but that didn’t discourage hundreds of protesters from rallying outside the base on Monday. More than 30 people were arrested, including Daniel Ellsberg, the whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers and a Guernica interviewee.

Before being carted off, Ellsberg remarked to the crowd, “I want Bradley Manning’s courage to be contagious.” The guy is 79 years old. What have you done today?
