Rec Room: Katherine Dykstra: New Orleans Jazz

April 21, 2010

Katherine_Dykstra-small.jpgIf you’re watching Treme, Wire-creator David Simon’s latest, about New Orleans post-Katrina (which I highly recommend along with my colleague, David Xia), you’ll want to add some of that big brass band sound—in many ways the heartbeat of the show, to your library.

Here are five that make an appearance in the first two episodes:

Kermit Ruffins: Live at Vaughan’s

Rebirth Brass Band: Do Whatcha Wanna

Coco Robicheaux: Spiritland

Galactic: Ya-Ka-May

Louis Prima: Buona Sera

Bio: Katherine Dykstra is the nonfiction editor at Guernica. Her interview with author and Pulitzer Prize-winner Sheryl WuDunn appeared in Guernica’s January 15th issue. Read her last recommendation of the collection of short stories Nothing Right “here”:http://www.guernicamag.com/blog/1651/rec_room_katherine_dykstra_not/.
