Hey, Guernica Readers. This is just a quick, informal note letting everybody know that Reiner Leist is speaking at the Strand Bookstore here in New York on Monday, 11 September at 7pm. From the Strand’s own site:
Between 1995 and 2006, Reiner Leist used a large-format antique camera to capture 2,200 photographs of downtown NYC from his 26th floor apartment. To celebrate the release of his book, Eleven Septembers, The New Yorker art editor Elisabeth Biondi, Bonnie Yochelson, an art historian and former curator of photographs at the Museum of the City of New York, and Chelsea gallery owner Julie Saul will discuss the relationship between images, individual lives, history, landscape and architecture in NYC.
Reiner and I recently sat down to talk about his photography, “current show at Julia Saul Gallery”:http://www.saulgallery.com/chronicle/leist_11sept.html and forthcoming book, “Eleven Septembers.” Check back early next week to read/listen/view it here at Guernica.
Reiner is a rare artist with an honest approach to and a nuanced conceptual understanding of his work and its context. It should be a great event.
