New York, NY — The board of Guernica Magazine—an award-winning, free online magazine of art & politics, now in its 10th year as an entirely volunteer-driven, nonprofit publication—today announced the appointment of Lisa Lucas as Publisher and the magazine’s first full-time, paid employee. Michael Archer, co-founder of the magazine, will remain Editor-in-Chief. Archer, along with fellow board members Joel Whitney and Lorraine Adams, has charged Lucas—longtime volunteer publisher of the magazine—with overseeing the long-term strategic goals of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which is dedicated to publishing fiction, poetry, and art from around the world, as well as features and interviews that address issues of human rights, activism, and the environment from a global perspective. “Lisa’s proven non-profit-management acumen and passion for Guernica’s mission of bringing the best writing in arts and politics to the public for free make her ideal for this position. Last year, while volunteer publisher of the magazine, she launched a successful Kickstarter campaign that took a decisive step towards making our 10 year labor-of-love a strong, sustainable non-profit. I am excited to see the magazine grow and thrive under her leadership,” says Archer.
In the next calendar year, Lucas will focus on Guernica’s 10th anniversary gala on November 5, 2014, developing Guernica’s board of directors, organizational infrastructure, producing the magazine’s first print publication, expanding the range of voices featured in the magazine, and fundraising efforts that will enable the organization to compensate writers and make Guernica financially sustainable, keeping the magazine’s decade of award-winning content available online for free. “I am thrilled to be charged with ushering Guernica into a new era of growth and sustainability. Before joining Guernica, Lucas served as the Director of Education at Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) for six years and as a consultant for various non-profit organizations including Firelight Media, Sundance Film Institute, San Francisco Film Society and The Scholastic Art & Writing is also co-chair of non-fiction programming for the Brooklyn Book Festival.
