Staff Pick: Joel Whitney

July 10, 2009

Joel_Whitney-small.jpg I really loved Mark Seal’s new book, Wildflower: An Extraordinary Life and Untimely Death in Africa, about Kenyan conservationist Joan Root. She and her husband Alan were legendary wildlife filmmakers all over Africa, and lived a pretty charmed life surrounded by wildlife and adventure, until her violent and mysterious murder in 2006. Great story, fascinating life. (I read that Julia Roberts will play Root in a biopic.)

Bio: Joel Whitney is a founding editor of Guernica. His last article, “The Genocide Myth”:https://www.guernicamag.com/interviews/1031/the_genocide_myth/, appeared in Guernica‘s May 2009 issue. Read his last recommendation “here”:https://www.guernicamag.com/blog/1102/staff_pick_joel_whitney/.
