Why are confessional narratives by female writers so often tagged “brave” or “opportunistic” when the same is hardly ever true for males? Guernica will host a panel at this year’s PEN World Voices Festival to explore the ways that gender figures in the marketing, reviewing, and consumption of personal narratives. We’ll be joined by Benjamin Anastas, Trisha Low, Anthony Swofford, and Agata Tuszyńska. Our own Rachel Riederer will moderate.
The Ninth Annual PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature will take place in New York City from April 29 to May 5. Writers from across the globe will convene to explore bravery in art, politics, and personal life. Chaired by Salman Rushdie, this year’s festival examines writers’ impact on political transformations in recent global hot spots—Burma, Palestine, South Africa, Haiti, and Guantanamo Bay—as well as honor small acts of bravery displayed in daily life.
Guernica’s panel will take place Wednesday, May 1, at 7PM at the Center for Jewish History 15 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011. The event is co-sponsored by The Center for Jewish History, the Writer’s Foundry at St. Joseph’s College, and the Polish Cultural Institute.
