beth_onusko-small.jpgSince 2000, an eclectic variety of bands have released compilation CDs as part of a series called “LateNightTales.” Acts including Arctic Monkeys, Flaming Lips, Fatboy Slim, and Belle and Sebastian have each put together “the ultimate late night collection.”

Air, the French electronica band whose work has been featured on the soundtracks for several of Sofia Coppola’s films, put together an incredible edition for LateNightTales. Their selections create the same atmosphere as a typical Air CD—mellow, ethereal, emotional without being sentimental. The songs include Cat Power’s “Metal Heart,” The Cure’s “All Cats Are Grey,” and Lee Hazlewood’s “My Autumn’s Done Come.”

Admittedly, I wasn’t sure what to expect the first time I listened to the CD—but Air’s taste is impeccable. Their selections are not only interesting individually, but they build upon one another the way any good collection, musical or otherwise, should.
