The Plan (2003 – present) is a series of photographs that were taken within the homes of people who have an obsessive compulsive hoarding disorder; or people who are otherwise unable or unwilling to get rid of the belongings that crowd the spaces of their homes.

Schmelling has primarily been working on this project in the accompaniment of (and at times, working for) a New York based company that specializes in cleaning up homes and counseling hoarders. Thirty photographs from this series were shown at Bucket Rider Gallery in Chicago, IL, June 3 – July 9, 2005.

Michael Schmelling is a photographer living in New York City.
